OUR
STORY
Tilia Builders is named after the basswood tree, Tilia americana. Although not common in Nova Scotia, basswoods are found in the more southerly reaches of the Wakanaki-Acadian forest. Known as a hardy, imposing tree, their wood is easy to work with, lightweight and soft, while also being very stable over time.
Tilia was founded on the picturesque South Shore of Nova Scotia in 2015. We consider ourselves progressive in the industry, dedicated to long-lasting craftsmanship, environmental sustainably and social equity. Over the past 10 years, our team’s commitment to home building excellence has crafted our reputation as passionate, thoughtful and professional builders of fine homes. We take immense pride in our collaborative approach, working closely with a professional network of architects and tradespeople to deliver efficient homes that exceed our clients' expectations.
From the early drawings to the final touches, our team is dedicated to providing unparalleled craftsmanship, attention to detail, and superior quality. We understand that building a home is a deeply personal journey, so we prioritize open communication and transparency throughout the process. By seamlessly integrating innovative design, durable materials, and leading-edge execution, we create homes that not only exude timeless elegance but also prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency.

Tilia's success is made possible by our team of dedicated and professional carpenters. We're committed to executing detailed work along with promoting safety, equity and innovation in the trade.
Leadership
Michael Mandale, Owner
Michael’s passion for carpentry started at a very young age, building his first backyard shed when he was 10 years old. Orginally from Chester, Michael often was found tagging along with a local carpenter for pseudo after school care. After pursuing a degree at Mount Allison University, he went head first back into the trades, working with a local home builder and managing his own business on the side.
Along with his partner, Mary Jane, Michael moved to the south shore of Nova Scotia in 2015, launching Tilia Builders with long-time friend, Liam Finney. After deciding to part ways in 2024, Michael has continued to guide Tilia as they become a leader in high-end residential construction in the region. Known for his quick wit, compassion, and steady drive, Michael values relationships as much as results, and is committed to building homes - and partnerships - that stand the test of time.
